Today, I’m thrilled to share the recipe with everyone! Cheater Sesame Chicken is all the things you adore about takeout Chinese sesame chicken, but it’s made in your own kitchen. No deep frying is necessary; it only takes a few minutes. I consider that a victory!

A dish that delights this die-hard lover of Chinese cuisine may be made by combining readily available ingredients with around ten minutes of hands-on preparation time. There are no takeout containers necessary!

Stir-fried ground chicken

Although ground chicken is readily available in the majority of grocery stores, there are two alternatives if you are having trouble locating it. Boneless, skinless chicken thighs can be ground yourself, or you may use lean ground turkey as a replacement.

If you ask them, the butcher’s counter at your neighborhood grocery store might even be willing to grind it for you! They’re generally helpful.

You may be astonished by how differently ground chicken cooks if you have never used it before. The meat should not be “browned;” instead, just keep an eye out for when it turns opaque and no longer pink.

That will serve as proof that it is complete. However, as the cooking process comes to a conclusion in the simmering sauce as it thickens, don’t be concerned if there are a few pale pink pieces here and there.

Since the dish calls for a lot of soy sauce, it’s crucial that we use a low-sodium soy sauce for our Cheater Sesame Chicken, as otherwise the finished product will be overly salty!

In the same way, our sauce should be made with a low-sodium chicken stock or broth. It’s simpler to begin with low-sodium components and increase the salinity if that’s what our palates prefer, rather than attempt to remove salt at the conclusion.

You can easily find toasted sesame seeds in the Asian foods sections of supermarkets, but if not, you can toast your own in a matter of minutes. Just put your sesame seeds in a dry skillet or saucepan over medium heat.

Move the pan back and forth to release the aroma from the seeds. Leaving them in the pan will almost certainly scorch them, so move them right away to a small dish or plate to cool.

When mixing most of the sesame seeds and green onion slices into the Cheater Sesame Chicken, set some aside. You will then have a little bit left over to garnish your Chinese chicken before serving.

For lunch, we’ve enjoyed Cheater Sesame Chicken served over rice, on lettuce leaves as wraps, and on spinach salads. What are your plans for consuming it?

Components

  • a tablespoon of refined coconut or sunflower oil
  • two pounds of ground chicken
  • a teaspoon of kosher salt
  • 6 cloves of garlic, finely minced
  • two tablespoons of ginger paste or grated ginger
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of chili garlic sauce
  • Brown sugar, 3/4 cup
  • half a cup of low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup sesame oil that has been toasted
  • In addition to 1/4 cup, 1 1/4 cups of low-sodium chicken broth or stock should be used.
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds that have been roasted
  • 8 finely chopped green onions

Guidelines

  1. Over medium heat, drizzle the coconut or sunflower oil into a stainless steel everyday pan or cast iron skillet with high sides. Add the ground chicken, season with salt, and cook, breaking it up with a bamboo or wooden spoon until it is no longer pink and becomes opaque. Add the chopped garlic and ginger, turn the heat up to medium-high, and cook for approximately a minute, or until it’s fragrant. Mix in the chili garlic paste and brown sugar, then cook for thirty seconds. Combine the soy sauce, sesame oil, and 1 1/4 cup chicken stock in a mixing bowl, and pour over the chicken. Bring to a simmer.
  2. Combine the remaining 1/4 cup of chicken stock with the cornstarch and mix until it is smooth. Pour into the simmering chicken and sauce, stirring vigorously until combined. If it gets too thick, return it to a simmer, lower the heat to medium low, and allow it to bubble and thicken for around three minutes, adding chicken broth one tablespoon at a time.
  3. Take it off the heat and mix in the green onions and sesame seeds. Serve hot on rice, warm on lettuce leaves, or cold on salads.
